Back to St. Swithuns Quad View | Back to Home
|1||This is one of the bigger Swithuns rooms. It also has a high ceiling and
dodgy plaster mouldings which seem to impress parents. There is a lack of
wardrobe and storage space in general, though you do get a couch and decent
sized desk. Being on the ground floor is great for not climbing stairs, but
the shower is one (cold stone staircase) floor up and the loo two floors up.
The windows also face straight out onto the High Street, which is great for
people-watching, but as it also has trees planted straight in front the
light can be a bit limited. There's double glazing, so it's not too noisy

|2||This is a ground floor room, facing into the quad (first glass doors after Swithuns tower). About as central in college as you could possibly hope for, this room is ideal for someone who does not like climbing stairs much, and who wants to be near to everything - the lodge, the bar, the computing rooms and so on.
Being ground floor and facing in, you are in a prime position to be sociable (people will bang on your window to see if you are in all the time), but this can obviously be a bit intrusive or disturbing at times.
Small but well furnished, good light and pretty view of the stone wall of the President"s garden over Swithuns lawn. Unfortunate feature of the placing of the stone hearth and the wardrobe means that there is no way of laying out your furniture so that the bed is not about 6 inches from the wall at best - irritating but surmountable. More arduous is that the only toilet on the staircase is on the second floor (single shower on first).
Also has badly placed power points.
this is a very sweet little room. Not too little - you can fit about twenty people in if you really need to, and there's lots of storage space. Unfortunately the shape is a bit odd, meaning that unless you're cleverer than I your furniture won't fit perfectly anywhere, and there will be a gap between your bed and the wall big enough for your leg. The best thing about this room is it's location: It's on the ground floor in the centre of college, so people will knock and say hello all the time, and you're never far from the bar, the computer rooms, the library, or the deer. Which you can see sometimes out of the window. You're also right next to what is arguably the nicest kitchen on Swithins (not necessarily saying much). The worst thing has to be that the toilet is four staircases up, and the shower two. And that people will knock on your window all the time...
|3||'This room is a very good 2nd year room - it is big, sunny and warm,
and although it faces the road, the sound-proofing is very good on the whole. It does have an oak pannelled window seat and some lovely plaster
motifs on the wall though, and is in prime position for that early morning
dash to the shower.'
Very little storage.
One of the small rooms in Swithuns, facing into the quad - gorgeous view, and no noise of traffic. there is no double glazing, and you can hear people in the quad, but no-one is generally that noisy - certainly a quiet room. The room is next to the staircase shower, but the walls are thick, and you can hardly
hear that, either - neither can you hear any creaky pipes. Noise does not travel that much between the rooms in general. The room is north facing, so no direct sunshine, but you do not notice that the room is particularly gloomy either.
Summary - small but sweet.
This is on the second floor, which means there is a wonderful view of the Grove, quad and Pres"s garden, but consequently there are seven flights of stairs down to the kitchen. The room itself has "character", meaning basically that it has an incredibly high ceiling, a mantelpiece, and the smallest windowseat in the world. The furniture is alright, although there is a lack of shelfs that makes keeping things tidy difficult. The room is one of the smaller ones, and it faces North. Whoever lives here will need a fair number of posters/throws, as the entire room is painted in that cream paint the College seems so fond of. Its also right next to the toilet, which may or may not be a good thing. On the whole, its a good room, and fairly close to the centre of college, although the number of stairs can be annoying when trying to get all your stuff in and out. Also, the walls are incredibly thick, so you dont have to suffer your neighbours taste in music.
- top floor room facing south with a lot of sun (WHEN it shines, obviously)
- overlooking High Street (with Daubeny Building on other side)
- very spacious and comfortable
- tiled fireplace
- there is noise from the High Street but the double glazing is thick and having lived in a room facing the street last year I didn't find it a problem
- sometimes when it rains VERY heavily you can hear the water rushing down the drains outside, behind the wall the bed is against. I didn't mind this so much but if it bothered you, moving the bed would be pretty easy.
- very long shelf across one wall - useful for DVDs, books etc
- cooking facilities and fridge are in the cellar (which is particularly annoying when you recognise that you forgot something in the kitchen)
- only one toilet and shower for the whole staircase (and consequently some competition)
- two sets of plug sockets, on opposite sides of the room
|8||Small and cosy room at the top of swithuns. Bog standard sink/desk/bookcase etc... not a lot of storage space - only one wardrobe and that is it. Pretty quiet since not on the roadside and the rooms on the adjacent staircase are not student rooms. Very nice view across swithuns quad and over deer park. The staircase has one of the better kitchens in college I think too. Probably a good option if you are running out of college rooms to pick from. (Edit)||yes||no||no|
